How to be a Good Podcast Guest

Being asked to be on a podcast is such a thrill - they want to hear from YOU!

You'll have the opportunity to share your story, tell the podcast audience about your business and promote any classes, courses or events you have coming up.

But, not every podcast will be a good fit for you, so here's a few things to ask yourself before saying yes to the podcast...

  • What benefit does this give me or my business?

  • Does my audience and the podcast's audience have a cross over?

  • What knowledge can I bring to this podcast?

Now that you've said yes to the podcast recording, it's time to prepare.

Here are my tips on how to be a good podcast guest:

Pre Recording:

Listen to the podcast

I know this sounds like an obvious one but it's a very important one. I would advise that you listen to at least 2 episodes to understand the vibe of the podcast, any segments to expect and how the host likes to run it.

Be on time

Physically on the day, yes - showing up to the zoom call or recording studio punctually is a big YES. But there's all the behind the scenes work that the podcast host or their producer (whoever is handling the guest management) has to do like booking the right time, getting your social links, image and bio.

From a podcast producer, please make their life easier and just send it through as soon as you can!

Give Suggestions

If you have suggestions for questions you'd like to be asked, that is music to a host's ears. You're helping them guide the conversation in a way that will work perfectly for you both. So be sure to send through anything you're promoting and suggest the questions that will help you promote it the best way possible.

Time to Record:

Try not to ramble

Now, I know it's tough when you're talking about something you're passionate about but no body needs to listen to a 2 hour podcast episode. Keep your answers short and concise but with enough information that you're not giving blunt answers. Give the host time to respond to your question and ask follow up questions and do their usual segments.

Call-to-action

You'll likely be asked where the audience can find you, so make sure you have your call to action ready to go. Whether that's a freebie they can download from your website, or to slide into your DMs on Instagram - send them somewhere!

Prepare stories

Before recording you would have likely received the questions that the host will be asking you, and you can start preparing your answers to these questions. But I also advise to have 3 quick entertaining stories you can whip out at any time to woo the listeners and make them want to know more.

I hope these tips have been helpful and you can apply them in your next podcast recording. All you need to know before going is to take a big breath and enjoy the process.
