To Script or Not To Script

“Should my podcast have a script?”
This is a question I get asked a lot and it doesn't have a straight yes or no answer.

If you've been around my content for a little while, you know I love a plan. So I always suggest to my clients that having a plan is much more important than a script. I also have a free podcast episode planning worksheet which you can download here.

The level of scripting/planning really depends on the format of your podcast.

If you're a solo podcast host and running the show by yourself, you may have a script or scripted sections to ensure you're getting all of the content out in your episodes. Or if you're in a duo with your podcast bestie, you may be better off having a plan for who is saying what and in what order.

If your podcast format is interview based, please please PLEASE provide the questions to your guest before the episode. It helps them prepare and makes for a better flowing conversation. And on a selfish note - it also helps your podcast editor with less pauses and ums to edit out.

If your format is conversational, you may just need the topic and a couple of dot points and you can be on your way.

Here's what I do suggest scripting:

  • Podcast Intro

  • Podcast Outro

  • Trailer

  • Guest Introductions
